There are many reasons why you had to make an Emergency Dentist Appointment. Typically it’s not for good reasons i.e. Extreme toothache, broken tooth, lost crown, damaged braces and the list goes on.

Visiting the dentist isn’t fun at the best of times and can be very stressful for some people. With most people admitting that they feel uncomfortable whilst being sat in the dentist chair.

In this post we want to provide you with some suggestions on how to prepare yourself before the Emergency Dentist appointment. To make your visit as comfortable and painless as possible whilst providing your dentist with everything they need to help you.

If, however, you’re looking for advice on how to find an Emergency dentist, this article might be better.

Before your Emergency Dentist Appointment.

Some simple checks prior to your appointment will help things go far smoother.

If possible, carefully brush and floss your teeth, simple dental hygiene before your appointment makes it easier for your dentist to quickly clean the area.

If the dental clinic isn’t your regular dentist, it is wise to check if they need your dental history. If so, contact your regular dentist to have it sent over, if your lucky the emergency dentist will do this for you.

Remember to bring Insurance and payment information, if it is a new dentist arriving a little bit early will allow the receptionist to process your insurance details and allow you ample time to fill out the health questionnaire that every dental office requires.

If you have damaged a tooth or broken dentures/crowns etc, clean and bring the item with you preferably in a lidded container. This will make it easier for the dentist to replace or repair the damage.

Arrive on time or early, dentists are known for running late, but getting there on time allows you to relax before seeing the dentist. This can be helpful. Often people arrive stressed out from work or from their journey to the dental office. Allow yourself 5-10 minutes before the appointment to relax.

If your regular dentist can’t see you, forcing you to find a new dentist, it is wise to check the status of your dental insurance so that you are not left with a costly bill after the appointment with the new dentist.

These simple things can help improve your visit to the dentist.

During the Emergency Dentist Appointment.

Typically it is whilst the dentist is working that we feel uncomfortable or pain. This is especially true in Emergency appointments as there can be a lot of pain initially. Below are some key things you can do to relax and lessen the pain.

RELAX, Studies show that once you sit in the dentist chair, stress levels increase with people clenching fists, and their muscles tightening. This is one of the core reasons for you being uncomfortable and can also lead to pain as the jaw muscles tighten making it harder for the dentist to work in the mouth.

Talk to the dentist before he/she starts. Take note to mention if you are nervous and ask what the treatment is to follow. If you have a sensitive gag reflex, tell the dentist, he/she will take extra care not to exacerbate gagging. If you are especially nervous or concerned, agree with the dentist a signal which will allow you to take a break. Raising of the hand is often a good method.
The key aspect here is for you to understand what he/she is doing but more importantly that the dentist knows what you are worried about. This is especially true for Emergency Dentist appointments as they can often be with new dentists.

“Music calms the savage beast”. A lot of the time, dentists will allow patients to plug into their MP3players or mobile phones with small headphones and allow them to listen to music. Or be able to play the music in the room from a speaker set. Listening to your favourite songs triggers the brain to think about old memories and instantly takes your mind off what the dentist is doing. We suggest you pick relaxing favourites and not a compilation of Thrash Metal.

BREATHE, most people hold their breath whilst the work is being carried out. Often subconsciously again triggering the body to be uncomfortable and under stress. You should focus on your breathing when possible in through the nose and out through the mouth. Using deep breathing techniques will physically relax your body and mind.
This can be done through the dental appointment but especially at times of pain, as it will help you relax and focus your thoughts away from the pain.

After the Emergency Dentist Appointment.

Here we have a few points on what to do before you leave the emergency dentist and what you can do to reduce the pain after the appointment.

Speak with the dentist after the appointment and check if there were any issues, what you should do to reduce the pain. Especially check if he spotted anything of concern that needs further work, this can often prevent you from needing an emergency appointment in the future.

If you are visiting a different dentist to your regular one, this is a great opportunity for a second opinion. For example, if you have a cavity and you saw the dentist 3 months ago, should any decay should have been seen. If this is the case, you may need reconsider who your dentist is.

Check with the receptionist that they have all your details, double-check that they have your address and phone number correct. Also make sure they have the right name, address and number for your current dentist, so that they can send the records through.

If you are using a new Dentist make sure you get a receipt for the work done or a copy of the invoice they will be sending your insurance company.

The dentist will recommend the best pain relief for your symptoms, but frequently Advil will help to reduce the pain and the swelling. If you are overly concerned about pain post-treatment, you ask for a prescription for pain-killer, but often enough the Advil will help and applying an ice pack for 15 minutes to the area will reduce help swelling. Repeat the ice packs every 15 minutes with breaks in between for 5 minutes and keep doing this for the first 24 hours.

We hope that the information we have provided above is useful and helps you during your Emergency Dentist Appointment.

Question by Amy Clark: I will need some discomfort relief rapidly.. please assist?
I had a enormous cavity that I left “un-fixed” for about 2 years. A few months ago right after not becoming able to deal with the discomfort anymore- I went in and had it fixed. The dentist stated it wasn’t abscessed or anything- so he just did a filling. (Like half my tooth was missing)
Anyways- right after that it was fine… no discomfort- nothing. Nevertheless about 2 weeks ago I started to get dull discomfort in the tooth. But on Friday night it got genuinely poor. Just horrible pains- worse than prior to I had it fixed. The dentist told me, if abscessed or one thing that the pain would be 10x worse than prior to and then I would will need a root canal.
So my question is. I gave birth to my 3rd child on Nov 14- and had some 800mg IBuprofin left from the discomfort meds they gave me for following my c-section. I have been taking them every single 6 hours since friday night when the pain got poor- but the pain is still horrible- It feels like the medicine is not even performing Something. The dentist does not have an emergency quantity or anything- so I cannot call until Monday and who knows if I can get in Monday or I may have to wait a couple of more days. What the heck can I do for some discomfort relief- the discomfort is just unbearable. However it goes in “waves”- I can go 2 hours with no discomfort and BAM out of nowhere- just horrible discomfort- all shooting up the side of my face behind my eye and in my cheek bone etc.. then it lasts 30 minutes or so and goes away. At times I get relief for 10 minutes and other times it is a few hours.

Can anybody help me or tell me something else I can do for some discomfort relief? This is awful!

Finest answer:

Answer by howtoknowthetruth
I don’t know if this will work, but try this. I feel on the very same side as the tooth clip a clothespin to your earlobe. If that does not work try the other side. I tried it once and it seemed to work.

What do you believe? Answer below!

Question by Krista: Do i really need to get my wisdom teeth out?
Okay so I went to my dentist last April/May for a routine cleaning and he told me then I need to get my wisdom teeth out (I guess one or maybe 2 is coming in horizontal) . I was gonna be gone for 6 weeks until July so he told me to call this recommended oral surgeon right when I get back from my trip and schedule something. It’s December now and I haven’t scheduled it because I’m deathly afraid of needles and surgery.
Thing is, at this point, I’m wondering if I even need anything done. My teeth haven’t shifted, I’ve felt no pain whatsoever(knock on wood), so I’m not sure if there’s any urgency or if he was just trying to get his buddy who he recommends some clients. Because like I said there have been no problems and when he told me to make an appointment he made it sound like an emergency …”oh you’ll be gone for 6 weeks? alright well right when you get back you need to make an appointment!”
In these hard times especially i really don’t want to get anything done unless it’s causing me pain

When did you last visit the dentist? For a lot of people, regular dental check-ups are not high on their list of priorities. The reason they don’t make regular appointments isn’t money or lack of time, the real reason is….fear. All too often, anxiety causes people to opt out of dental exams altogether. There are many dentists who now specialise in dealing with patients who have a fear of the dentist. Some people are afraid because they don’t know what to expect. Others are frightened by stories of negative dental experiences from family and friends. Still others associate sitting in the dentist chair, mouth open, with a feeling of helplessness and a loss of control. Most of the time, however, the fear and anxiety are rooted in bad childhood experiences. Maybe they overheaqrd a careless comment from someone in the surgery about pain, or they heard the drill in the background as they waited. Or maybe the dentist was insensitive or rough or even inflicted pain.” Dental Edinburgh aim to help you beat this fear.

Question by Anonymous: Why do dentists reason that they should pull so many teeth at once on sensitive patients?
One of my family members was diagnosed with gum disease, and the dentist still pulled a dozen teeth. The dentist sent them home with a 6-inch packet of gauze and told them to change the gauze every 45 minutes. The problem was, they didn’t stop bleeding. They lost 2-3 pints of blood (not an over dramatic statement – I witnessed it in person and they did lose around that much). We couldn’t get the bleeding to stop, and I ended up driving them to the ER.

I had no idea abou teabags stopping bleeding – which is what the ER staff spent 2 hours with teabags, trying to do. Finally, they were able to stop the bleeding. The dentist, staff and paperwork given to them did not say anything about using teabags or any other means other than “change the gauze every 45 minutes” to stop the bleeding. The dentist sent her out of the office with gauze packed on the gums, bleeding everywhere and through the gauze. Well, with that many extraction sites, you can’t possibly change them all at once. You pull one out, it starts bleeding and gets everything else in the mouth bloody, before you even get that one in. They were admitted to the hospital and stayed a little over a day. A couple of days afterwards, another “emergency dentist” that we found prescribed them some antibiotics for their gums – something not given by the previous dentist.

I got in touch with their area and regional manager, and eventually the Dental Director, who agreed to pay all bills related to this incident. While he has refused to admit that the dentist “did anything wrong”…he said they will pay all related hospital, doctor and other dental bills related to the situation (right now it’s looking at about $ 5K to $ 8K). We are unable to sue them because it seems that laws passed a while back are more in favor of crooked dentists than of the patients, from what a lawyer explained to me. But being that the Dental Director is so “willing” to pay for all of this, one can’t help but to see that they must be trying to cover up something. The regional manager told me that “they would be issuing write-ups to employees and re-training”. Obviously that didn’t do a freaking thing for my family member. Also, a laywer would cost much more after paying them out of anything that we would win from a lawsuit. “Negligence” cases do not seem to go very far nowadays. Though I can’t help but ask myself what kind of an idiot would pull a dozen all at once time, knowing that they diagnosed a patient with gum disease and that it would likely cause excessive bleeding more than that of a normal gum?

Yes, the family member is at fault for not taking care of their teeth. Yes, they did go to the dentist to try to do what they could for that issue. However…should a person bleed to death because they went to a dentist, or because they didn’t take care of their teeth? People go to dentists all the time for cavities…that’s a result of failing to take care of their teeth. Dentists go to dentists to get their own cavities filled, false teeth, etc. So…why are dentists so crazy about yanking out as many teeth as they can from people?
Eng Hin – They are otherwise healthy and have never had any high blood pressure problems or blood clotting problems. They have a normal clotting time.

Best answer:

Answer by C
I’ve had my own problems with bad dentists. I also found it was impossible to sue. You are lucky that they are paying for the hospital bill. My dentist did not agree to pay for anything after he gave me a mouth full of acrylic that he knew I was allergic to. It has cost me over $ 20,000 and I still need $ 5000 more in work.

Question by Mr. Bigglesworth: Insurance will not cover charges from dental accident/bill or only parts of it.. what can I do?
Our current insurer is MAMSI UnitedHealthcare. I recently (3 months ago) had a bicycle accident where I fell on my arm (severely fracture, but it’s better now) and hit my teeth against the pavement… I was taken to emergency on an ambulance. The following day, I required a brief examination to the regular dentist, who sent me to an endodontist. The endodontist FILED down (to gum level) my front teeth to see how far the cracks on my teeth went. Unfortunately, the teeth’s roots had to be surgically removed 2 days later. My insurance only wants to cover 80% of the CUSTOMARY, which adds up to 45% of the endodostist’s charges and does not want to cover for the oral surgery based on the fact that they did not receive the TIME at which the oral surgery was performed. They also claim that both specialists were out of network and that only 80% of the CUSTOMARY (customary = regular charges THEY BELIEVE should be covered… so, it’s NOT 80% of the REAL CHARGES! 80% ends up being about 40% of the REAL charges, if not a little less or a little more) will be covered, if any. When I called the insurance company, 1 day after the accident, I could barely speak due to the pain and broken teeth. The reps said “you’ll be covered, no worries, go to the dentist”… based on this, I went to the endodontist and oral surgeon referred by my regular dentist. I also need implants, but the insurance will not cover them (as it says so in the manual, even if it’s due to an accident/emergency) I’m really having a hard time with the insurance. Is there anything that I can legally do? Is there anything I could do for them to cover the implants? The accident took place in VA and the bills are high. I do not know what to do. Any help or advice will be highly appreciated. THANKS! Soon, my job will upgrade our policy to UnitedHealthcare and, apparently, the new policy will cover implants IF they are the result of an accident. I called under the soon-to-have policy and they could not provide me info on this only until the new policy kicks in… does anyone think the new policy will cover charges based on a pre-existing accident? (but MAMSI seems to be part of UnitedHealthcare… it’s so complicated!)

It is affordable and has good coverage for dental issues.
